fiz-pop!

A little 'shit!' was hissed out through his teeth as he glared at his right hand and waved it a bit. It was bad enough that he'd totaled his own car three days ago, he doubted his mother would understand him totaling hers. But as much as he'd wished he'd be able to help it, the memory was still fresh and to add to the fact that he was anxious his fireworks would paf to life, again, there was also meeting her that made him even more nervous.

He groaned and ran his left down his face.

The lights turned green.

"You have one voice message. Shiro-kun...it's Mina. I know you're driving so I'll just leave this message. I'm waiting for you in the central fountain in Wadakura now. See you." call ended.

Shiro wondered if it was just him...or the fact that Mina had chosen the place they had shared their first kiss as a meeting spot had not boded well to him.

A minute or two later, he would be turning to the main road towards Chiyoda and in a few more, he would find himself casting his eyes upon the familiar entrance of Wadakura Fountain Park. That time he and Mina had kissed, he was doing a study of sorts in the nearby Prince Hotel -- which was actually the reason he'd frequented this park.

"Mina," he'd called as soon as she was within hearing range, hopping a few paces closer to her, then slowing down with a smile on his face. Autumn was well on its way to its last day and so a wintry breeze was blowing through the park. He had on a burgundy short coat, the inside of which was covered with red cloth, and a maroon scarf over his white tee. His jeans were dark and work boots ebony.

She, on the other hand, wore her white furry jacket over her red top, a green skirt and a pair of black long socks to match her dark-shaded sneakers. She turned to him with her phone on her hand, smiled and gave a small wave.

A small wave.

Shiro recalled she used to approach him and they'd hug.

"I hope I didn't keep you waiting."

"Mm," Mina shook her head, long brown hair swaying to the movement before she looked up to the approaching male. "It's okay, it wasn't too long." When he moved his hands towards her folded elbows, she turned to glance at it.

But Shiro only licked his lips and held his hands at a level...wondering.

Mina closed her eyes at this, "Sh, Shiro-kun...there's something I need to tell you."

"Mina, don't speak yet."

"About last time--"

"Mina, I tried to help it," Shiro insisted, watching her open her eyes and gaze at him as though in wide wonder. "What...what happened was an accident."

"An accident?" Mina turned to face her boyfriend with her body and before he spoke, she said, "Shiro-kun, had you been keeping this from me??"

"Mina, I--" pause...think. Mina's words sunk into his mind a moment later and Shiro was left to sigh through his nostrils and step back, brushing brown locks off his face.

Mina knew what that meant, "You had been keeping this from me, hadn't you??" Forcing herself to him, she added, "Shiro-kun, how could you! We promised no secrets, remember?"

"Mina, it wasn't something I could help."

"Help? Shiro-kun, what--"

"Mina, can you please let me talk first??" his request was responded to with silence from the smaller woman and Shiro took this chance to recalculate his thoughts, his words; he looked up to the fountain glowing behind Mina as he held his mouth with his right...he needed to make sure the words came out right and good.

"...how long have you had it?" Mina had spoken again, though, after the silence. "Recently? Since junior high...?"

"Much earlier," Shiro admitted with a resigned sigh, hand dropping and slipping into his coat's pocket. "It first came out when I was a kid...at first, I thought it was nothing, just colorful lights popping out of my hands. And then it got violent and destroyed my wall...so I told myself I wouldn't use it again. It didn't come out until the accident."

"But you had been keeping it from me," Mina insisted with a frown. "But more importantly," staring dead into his eyes, she said, "You're...a mutant...that makes you a mutant, doesn't it? Ne, Shiro-kun?"

His eyes grew at the word, "Mina, don't say that!" and he closed the distance between them with a step and grasped both her hands with his and held them firm. But she pulled away and he watched her move backwards...eyes on his hands. Shiro looked at his, too, and nodded, understanding why she'd done that. "I'm sorry."

"It's..."

Shiro looked at her, "...but please...don't say that. I, I'm not sure what I am, really...I could be that. But...I'm not so sure yet."

"Do you need someone to tell you you are that?" Mina returned his look, "Shiro-kun...you destroyed a truck with your own bare hands. You burned them without even a bomb or an explosive or--"

"Mina, I know what I did!" he said, "And I've been thinking about it day in and out and I'm not happy with it." when Mina had turned to look at the fountain, Shiro could only sigh and walk away a few paces, brushing his hair up with his hands before turning to look at his girlfriend. Something itched on his left palm and he fisted that hand -- this was most possibly the worst time for his fireworks to show up. "...Mina, if I'd been able to control what happened, do you think I'd insist on the explosion? Do you think I'd use my...my...!" He grunted -- fuck it all, "Mina, I did that to save you!"

"I know, I know," Mina winced and nodded, shutting her eyes tight as she dipped her head, she wasn't about to look at him. "But Shiro-kun...we can't turn back time, can we? We don't know what's happened to that poor man."

"Mina, don't talk like that."

"And we don't know what'll happen next..." she opened her eyes and looked up to him -- the glow of the lights mirrored by her tears, "In the future..."

"Mina..." Shiro bit his lower lip as he watched her, racking his mind for words to say, "...Mina, if you're worried about our family, our lives...then you won't have to. I'll control it, I promise. It won't happen again ever...I promise that."

"But how?" now her tears were audible in her voice and Mina sniffled, turning a bit to face him, "You may be able to hold it back for a few years again...but what would you do if it springs out like that again? Maybe when you're holding your baby, or me, or...or anything! Anything can happen, Shiro-kun."

"...does this mean..." Shiro started, voice soft, hushed... "Are you...giving up on me? Us...?"

Mina bit her lips, "I'm sorry, Shiro-kun."

"Don't you love me anymore? Mina..."

"Please," Mina closed her eyes shut, tears welling and streaming down her cheeks, "Shiro-kun, stop it. I've thought about it...and I've decided." she opened her eyes to see him taking a step forward, moving his hand to hold her, "We can't...we can't go on like this. You with an unpredictable...power, me...unable to help control it, too," her voice fell to a whisper as she sniffled. "I'm not saying I don't love you, anymore...but it'll be hard. You and I are suddenly different and I," she shook her head, "I don't know what will happen. They could find you, they could take you from me! I won't be able to live through that."

"Why are you thinking these things?" his brows arched as she closed her eyes and sobbed, "Mina, there won't be any good coming off those thoughts. Sure they're possible, but Mina, they can not happen, too. W, we," he gestured around him, "we can still lead a normal life! I, I'll find a way to control these fireworks, and if they find me, they won't take me away from you."

"But what if they do?" Mina sniffled, "Shiro-kun, you don't even know how to control them yet! Anytime now, something bad could happen and..." she sighed, shaking her head as she let her tears flow freely down her cheeks.

Shiro stood to watch her...uncertain whether he should take her into his arms or just...keep distance...remembering how she pulled away when he held her. "Mina..." he tried again, "Mina, I know you're scared. And me...I'm scared, too. But...but nothing would happen if we're both scared, right? Don't you understand that, Mina?"

Mina shook her head, "I'm sorry."

"Mina," Shiro insisted. But when she shook her head, turned around and started to leave, he took giant steps towards her and grabbed her by the hand, ignoring her yelp as he held her firmly, "Mina, please! I'm asking you to stay."

But she still shook her head, whispered an apology and forced her hand back. This time, she stole to a jog, weeping and shaking her head.

And Shiro was left by the fountain, unable to do anything but watch her run and disappear into Tokyo's night...a sigh seeped out of his nose and he grabbed his hair with both hands as he stumbled backwards.

Mina...he loved her deeply...
